TAMPACHANIOTIKA – Urban songs of Western Crete

The work of Stelios and Leonidas Lainakis includes a music disc with 16 published and unpublished songs that are part of the urban folk tradition of Western Crete, as well as an 88-page booklet available in two languages (greek-english) with detailed texts, signed by the professor of national musicology of the University of Athens and president of the Phoebos Anogeianakis Museum of Folk Instruments, Lampros Liavas, the professor of classic literature of the University of Athens, Michalis Z. Kopidakis, the emeritus University professor, Ertatosthenis G. Kapsomenos, and the music composer and researcher of music folklore, George E. Papadakis, who was in charge of the musical and artistic editing of the recordings. Also included are rare photographs of veteran musicians and singers, pillars of the cretan music tradition, information regarding the researchers, as well as the songs’ lyrics.

Rotonda Music and Events Civil Society

Rotonda Music and Events Civil Society was founded in the year 2009 by Leonidas Lainakis, with the purpose to promote and spread the traditional music and the know-how of the construction of the traditional musical instruments of Crete. Rotonda aims in promoting culture by organizing several cultural events. Within this scope, Rotonda regularly organises locally in Crete, as well as in Greece and abroad various cultural activities regarding music, the construction of traditional musical instruments and the culture in general by cooperating with different actors nationally and internationally.

In 2012 Rotonda releases a bilingual (greek/english) booklet regarding Tabahaniotika, the traditional music of the urban class of Western Crete of the 19th century, the first booklet ever released with this thematic, together with a cd with the corresponding music of Tabahaniotika. Rotonda has proven to be the safeguard of the traditional music of the Western part of Crete by its actions so far, such as the participation in various small and big cultural festivals, the organisation of seminars of the construction of traditional musical instruments, the educational seminars, the release of the booklet Tabahaniotika, the production of the CD Tabahaniotika and similar activities.
